The Nashville Symphony: a classic musical experience

Published: Feb 13, 2009

The seven-time Grammy Award-winning Nashville Symphony makes at least 140 annual performances.  The 84-member ensemble actively records its music more than most symphonies across the country.  You can see the Symphony perform in the $123.5 million Schermerhorn Symphony Center in downtown Nashville.

For a full concert line-up, visit the Nashville Symphony’s website.  In addition to regular performances, the Schermerhorn Center produces educational and community programs. Held on Tuesday evenings, OnStage at the Schermerhorn is designed for adult audiences to view a live performance and discuss topics in music with Symphony musicians.

Finding parking for symphony events is a breeze since SunTrust Bank began sponsoring free parking in 2007.  Additionally, the Schermerhorn Center offers a shuttle service for guests on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings in the months between September and June.

The Schermerhorn Center does not enforce a dress code.  Guests are encouraged to wear apparel that makes them feel comfortable.  Most attendees sport business or dressy causal clothing.

Plan on arriving 30 minutes early to the scheduled performance so you can take in the beauty of the center and find your seat with ease.  Guests who arrive late typically have two opportunities for admittance; once after the completion of the first work, and another after the completion of the first work following intermission.

Patrons can dine before performances in the Center’s café or restaurant.  There are nine bars throughout the hall; however, food and beverage are not allowed in the performance hall during Classical concerts.  Most performances last two hours with a 20-minute intermission.

Generally, the Symphony discourages guests from bringing young children to evening performances.  However, children ages 3-8 can enjoy a special performance by the Nashville Symphony from its Pied Piper programs.
