The Ryman Auditorium: modern music favorites at historic musical landmark

Published: Mar 3, 2009

The Ryman Auditorium, a Nashville landmark, opened its doors as a tabernacle for southern evangelists in 1892.  The Ryman fell under a national spot light when the Grand Ole Opry show began its run there in 1942.

In 1974, the Opry moved to its current home at Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center, and the Ryman faded somewhat from the Nashville music forefront.  But in 1992, the historic landmark was resurrected as the national musical attraction it is today.

A classic concert venue, the Ryman Auditorium showcases more than just country music.  Buy tickets to see your favorite bluegrass, rock, gospel, jazz and classical artists in concert at this historic site.  The Ryman is even used for musical theater.  The schedule of events can be found on the website.

A concert at the Ryman Auditorium is always a special event.  The traditional church pew seating creates a unique, intimate atmosphere -- a rarity at today’s modern music venues.  The Ryman is steeped in a rich musical history that is reflected throughout building.

The complete list of artists who have performed on stage at the Ryman is extensive.  Audiences have enjoyed the likes of country classic favorites from Patsy Cline, Roy Acuff and Johnny Cash to the modern rockers like Coldplay, The Dave Matthews Band and Lenny Kravitz.

And if history rather than concert performances draws you to the Ryman, you don’t have buy concert tickets to get a peek inside.  Anyone can explore the auditorium during the week on one of the daily tours.   Adult tickets are $12.50 (with Backstage Tour option - $16.25) and tickets for children, ages 4 to 11, are  $6.25 (with Backstage Tour option -- $10).  For more information, call (615) 458-8700.

Smoking is not permitted anywhere in the building.  The camera policy varies for each event per the request of the performing artists.  Patrons can enjoy food from the snack bars as well as beer, wine and liquor at most events.  Wheelchair seating is available in the balcony.
