The Biltmore Estate: Grand estate, larger-than-life experience

Feb 16, 2010

At the Biltmore Estate, refined tastes take center stage. Whether it’s wine you fancy or experiencing accommodations fit for royalty, this Asheville tourist attraction aims to please all visitors who find themselves on the expansive estate.

The majestic estate opened its doors to the public in 1895, surrounded by the natural beauty of the mountains and gardens, creating a perfect escape. The grandeur of the family-owned grounds still entrances thousands of visitors each year, providing guests an opportunity to take in panoramic natural views.

The 8,000 acres offers an array of outdoor activities, one-of-a-kind shopping and restaurants that offer a spread of savory dishes.

Whatever your age or interest, you’re sure to discover an outdoor activity just right for you at the Biltmore. Outdoor activities include carriage rides, horseback riding, river float trips, biking, hiking, fly fishing school and much more. For more information about outdoor activities, call (800) 411-3812.

Discover what it was like to live and work on the estate during the early 1890s at the self-guided tour of River Bend Farm. See live farmyard animals, antique farm equipment, and experience craft demonstrations. Shop in an old-fashioned mercantile store and enjoy ice cream and other sweet treats at the Creamery.  River Bend Farm is open daily, noon-6 p.m.

Take a behind-the-scenes look at the wine-making process during a self-guided tour at the Biltmore’s winery. Wine tastings are available free of charge. The Wine Shop offers hard-to-find wine accessories, gourmet foods and a complete selection of Biltmore Wines. To end your winery visit, settle in at the Wine Bar for a glass of your favorite wine of choice and tapas.

Restaurant options range in tastes, varying between freshly-baked pastries to hearty rotisserie fare. You have your choice between the Arbor Grill, Deerpark Restaurant and others. Estate admission is required to dine in these restaurants.

To prolong your experience, stay at the inn on Biltmore Estate. Guests can enjoy luxury rooms, marvelous mountain views, tea in the library and concierges eager to extend gracious hospitality.
