The Nashville Jazz Workshop; the jazz lover's haven
The Nashville Jazz Workshop is one of the Nashville art community’s hidden gems. Located in historic East Germantown, the Workshop is a “community center for jazz, with classes, public performances, and special events.” The non-profit organization serves as Nashville’s hub for jazz instruction, jazz concerts and other jazz events.
The mission of the Nashville Jazz Workshop is simple; provide the community with quality jazz educational opportunities and a unique setting for jazz performances.
The Workshop extends its reach into the art community by hosting visual art exhibits, student/faculty performances, a twice-monthly performance series — Snap on 2 and 4, and many other educational and performance events. The Workshop constantly updates its website with upcoming events at the Germantown venue.
Workshop performances are held in the “Jazz Cave,” a cozy setting in the basement of the old Neuhoff Meat Packing Plant. A full stage accommodates a stand-up bass, piano, drum set, and other instruments. A small bar at the back of the room serves drinks and spirits to guests. In between the stage and the bar is plenty of table seating.
The Nashville Jazz Workshop offers a variety of Jazz music education opportunities. Each class lasts for six weeks and meets for two hours once a week. The cost is $200 per course. Most sessions are offered in the evening. Visit the website for a complete list and description of courses.
Classes in performance, theory and improvisation require some experience and proficiency. However, jazz newcomers can register for classes such as history, styles and analysis; courses based on listening and discussion.
The Workshop even offers private lessons in improv, transcription, theory, ear training and more. Private lessons on bass, guitar, piano, drums, woodwinds and brass are taught by the area’s top local professionals.
For both season music fans and those curious about Jazz, the Nashville Jazz Workshop is worth exploring. Visit the website for a complete list of events, performances and educational opportunities.
