The Big Bang: live music with a twist

Published: Jan 28, 2009

Centrally located in the heart of downtown Nashville's legendary HonkyTonk Row, the Big Bang offers up a little something different. Some of Middle Tennessee’s most talented artists can be found performing weekly in this popular attraction, Nashville’s premier dueling pianos bar.

With limited signage on Broadway, it might be easy to pass right by the Big Bang if not for the line of people waiting to go upstairs. Located on the second floor above Paradise Park, the Big Bang packs the house on Friday and Saturday nights. The Big Bang calls itself a sing-along piano bar because the audience dictates the night's entertainment. Entertainers sit across from one another behind two grand pianos. As the audience requests the songs, the entertainers perform their own renditions.

Write your request on a napkin, anything from a selection from Kanye West to Billy Joel to a "Saturday Night Live" parody song. Upbeat and lively, the artists always ask the audience to participate, and the audience does not disappoint. Laughs abound as most performances take on a comedic flare.

And when audiences aren’t laughing, they're dancing in the aisles. The limited dance floor space doesn’t stop patrons from moving and grooving in between tables and next to the stage. Don’t be surprised if a Big Bang entertainer pulls you on stage and asks you to participate in the next song! The bar is a great place to visit for birthdays, bachelor or bachelorette parties, reunions or any gatherings.

The second-floor balcony overlooks the lights of Broadway. There patrons can enjoy their drinks and some conversation. The main bar sits adjacent to the stage and serves up a full menu, from beer to mixed drinks to shooters -- and, for the downtown scene, all reasonably priced. A smaller bar can be found in the back. And don’t forget to tip the bartenders; they are part of the entertainment, too!
