The Oyster Urban Adventure Race: A strategic race to the finish line
Published: Sep 25, 2009
Ever dreamed of participating in Amazing Race with a group of your friends? An upcoming event gives Nashvillians a chance to partake in a similar race.
The Oyster Urban Adventure Race has the same idea of a wilderness eco challenge/Amazing Race, but it takes place in a city and is conducted in one day. The race, filled with secrets, surprises and high-impact challenges, is scheduled to course through downtown Nashville on Oct. 24.
Unlike any of the runs and races that Nashville has seen throughout the years, the Oyster Urban Adventure Race is most memorable for its ability to combine athleticism with thought-provoking strategy. Those who sign up to participate in the race are in for pouring sweat, burning muscles and a brain tease.
How the race works: Team will run, bike, paddle, climb and participate in other athletic activities throughout the course of the race. Along the way, teams will be answering clues and completing tasks to move forward in the competition. Race officials promise teams will be participating in things that they’ve yet to experience in the Music City. Surprises of the past have included riding a roller coaster, eating a bug and swimming in an exhibit at an aquarium to complete the challenge. The course is kept a secret until the beginning of the race when teams receive a passport containing clues to the first destination.
The full course of the race is designed to travel 30 to 40 miles and on average takes four to six hours to complete. A half race, a scaled down version of the full course, is also featured at the event. Each team must have a minimum of three participants in order to compete in the race.
Equipment necessary for the racing challenge includes a bicycle and helmet, a cell phone, a small first aid kit, a digital camera and some cash.
Early registration, 30 days before race day, is $65 per person on the team. Regular registration, 29 days up until race day, is $75 per person. In addition to the registration fee, each team is required to raise $100 in pledges. Money raised from pledges will go toward the Oyster Racing Series which has partnered with local non-profit agencies to raise money for the various causes of the organization.
At least one teammate must check in the day before the race. The race will take place at 8 a.m. at the Country Music Hall of Fame Park located at 222 5th Ave. S.
