“My children attend ELMS. One child has attended since 8th grade and the other has attended since 5th grade. Some of the teachers lack passion and drive to teach and mold young minds. They are what I would call'paycheck' teachers. They do not attempt to go beyond the textbook and paper method. There are only a handful of teachers at the school who are really trying to 'teach' the students. These few teachers have very good classroom management skills. Behavioral problems / issues are handled in a way that it does not disturb others from learning. Basically, these teachers have their classroom in order. They have objectives, goals and expectations for their students and themselves as well. My second child has been fortunate to have such teachers. My first child on the other hand has not been as fortunate. Disruptive behavior is a problem”

“My son has been at ELMS since 5th grade. He is now a Freshman. The teachers have not been helpful in motivating or challenging my son to reach his full potential. To date, most of his classes have not been intellectually stimulating. He has been taking honors classes for the past 2 years and is still bored. Parents are encouraged to be involved with Fund Raisers and the PTSO. The main topic of the majority of PTSO meetings has been School Fund Raisers. Raising money for things that will improve the quality of education at the school is fine. However, if the students are not stimulated to grow and enhance their intelligence, the fund raising efforts are fruitless. The concert band is really good. The sad part is that with over 100 band members only 6 - 10 students are ever represented at booster meetings or Band fund raising activities.”

“I have been a student at East Literature Magnet for two years now, this being my graduating year, and have greatly enjoyed my time at East. I have had the pleasure of working with some of the finest teachers I've ever known while attending. I am very proud to call myself an East Eagle. The school is located in a richly historical area of Nashville and has only enhanced my perception of life. I love our school building itself, it has been newly renovated, yet still posseses the great qualities that tell of time. More importantly, I truly love the variation of students. East Literature is ethnically blessed and provides and encourages room for an even better learning experience. I will truly miss my High School years at East!”

“I've gone to East since 5th grade, and graduated in 2004. In my opinion, each year in that school improved not only technology wise, but academics as well. Each year I attended, only grew better for students to be able to receive an education, and have a better one-on-one interaction with the faculty. Like any school, it's not perfect, but it sure was on its way to be when I attended.”

“My children are going into their second year at East. I have had some concerns with disruptive behavior that goes on in a number of the classes. Overall my children have done well at East but I think that all of the students could benefit if the teachers would take charge of their class and send the disruptive children out.”

“I am a rising senior (c/o 06) and have been attending East Literature Magnet School since 8th grade. The teachers, for the most part, are exceptional, and they know their material. Dr. Whitley, Ms. Siebold, and Ms. Sexton are among the best teachers that I have had the privilege of learning under.”

“I am a student at East High. I started out there in the 5th grade, and I love it. Throughout my life I had great teachers who didn't allow me to just sit on my tail and not do anything. They made me do my work. They got really involved with my mother, too. Even though its a small school, we have less problems. I had to leave for behavioral reasons my 8th grade year, but I returned my 10th grade year and I refuse to go anywhere else. I will be a junior this 2005-2006 school year and I am certainly looking foward to it. The only sad part is we don't currently have a football and softball team, but I, along with others, are working on that problem. But we pretty much have the other sports and extracurricular activities at East.”

“My son has attended this school since grade 5 and is now a Junior. This school is one of the best. He has has great teachers who see his potential and push him to do better. Although there may some students who disrupt classes, demanding discipline is a top priority.”

“My daughter attended East Literature in 5th and 6th grade and is now a 7th Grader at MLK. The East teaching staff was as good (and some better -- thanks Mrs. King) as any other school in Nashville. However, I felt that the majority of the non-academic magnet schools have as much problems with discipline as the zoned schools. My daughter had a very time focusing with the disruptive students (at least a half dozen or so 'regulars in every class), yet nothing was ever done to rectify this problem beyond ISS.”

“My child attend East in the 5th and 6th grades. This school is very weak in literature, I agree the faculty cares but a little more focus on academics is needed. My daughter came home daily complaining about weekly fist fights at the school. She is now in the 7th grade at MLK and now she is being challenged academically.”

“Great school! Academics are strong & the teachers are dedicated to their profession. Caring environment is evident. The principal, Mrs. Stewart, is a creative & driving force & has assembled strong teams of teachers. My child loves the school & is once more enthusiastic about learning since coming here in 8th grade.”

“This school is very small they just started to try to improve it. They don't really have very many fine arts to expand there horizion. The best teacher is Mr.Rod stephens (math). even though they say lit. magnet thats what they are worst in. The over all school is ok. They don't have a very good sports department. 1-10 as a strong firm on education I rate it a 4. They don't have a strong band. It seems all they spend there money on is computers, not in the class room but in the lab which only 30% on the school is allowed in.”

“East literature is a truly great school. My son has attended for five years. He is an upcoming sophomore. The school is expanding into two buildings. I hope the extracurricular activities increase as the middle and high school seperate. Would recommend to anyone.”
