Spring Produce: fruits and vegetables that are in season

Studies have shown that eating an apple a day has a myriad of health benefits - like boosting your immune system and lowering your blood pressure. Luckily, plenty of apple varieties are in-season during the springtime.



Stop by your local supermarket during spring and you're bound to find the freshest apricots on the shelf. Apricots stay in season until the end of summer, making them the ideal healthy, sweet topping for ice cream. 



Whether you're pairing it with a perfectly seared steak or adding it to pasta, asparagus is a great side dish. Bonus: the crunchy, green vegetable is low in calories and high in potassium - a mineral that helps regulate your heartbeat.



We might have hated broccoli as children, but time has proven the delicious benefits of adding the vegetable to any meal. Use it in a casserole or roast, or saute it as a side dish - either way, it's delightful.



Cabbage is an integral part of the St. Patrick's Day celebration in March, and spring is a great time to get the leafy vegetable.



Maintaining a diet filled with rich nutrients is key to living a long and healthy life. And adding carrots to your diet can lower your risk of cancer and improve your eyesight.

Collard greens

Collard greens are a Southern delicacy and a superfood perfect for purchase in the spring. Collard greens are rich in vitamin A and vitamin C and a great source of fiber and calcium.



Is there anything garlic can't do? Studies have shown that it can help prevent Alzheimer's disease, dementia and the common cold; and from stews to pizzas, it pairs perfectly with almost any dish.



Salads are one of those items you can stop buying pre-made at the grocery store and make on your own. What better time than spring to perfect those salad-making skills? If you have fresh kale in your fridge, you can mix up a tasty salad in minutes.



Kiwis, the fuzzy brown and green fruit, can be enjoyed on their own or blended into a fruit smoothie. But no matter how you choose to eat kiwi, you should be on the lookout for the sweet treat during spring. And vitamin C in kiwis makes them beneficial for soft, glowing skin.



The best time to buy lettuce is just in time for grilling season. Put it on a decadent burger or chop it up and add it to your salad for a healthy cookout side dish.

Limes are handy if you're concocting a tasty cocktail or jazzing up the best tacos in town, and spring is the perfect time to buy them. Adding a squeeze of lime juice to your water has also been proven to boost the happiness hormones serotonin, dopamine and endorphins.



From oven-baked pizzas to omelets, mushrooms are the secret ingredient that takes any meal to the next level.  You can find some wonderful seasonal mushrooms, like morels, during spring.



Whether caramelized and added to eggs or chopped up as a hot dog topping, onions are a delicious addition no matter how you choose to eat them. And believe it or not, there is a way to chop up the vegetable without crying.



Spring is the best time to purchase fresh peas when you're tired of eating the frozen variety. And, contrary to popular belief, peas aren't just a boring veggie our parents forced us to eat. When cooked properly, peas can kick up plenty of dishes, even mac and cheese.



You don't have to be lounging on a beach in Hawaii to enjoy some pineapple. This sweet, tart fruit is at its tastiest in the spring. If you're not sure which pineapple is worth the buy, the Produce for Better Health Foundation recommends looking for one that has dark green leaves and is heavy for its size.

Stop by your local grocery store or farmers market in the springtime to get your hands on a fresh bag of radishes. And whether you're a rookie gardener or a pro, you can try your hands at planting your own radishes in time for the next season, they're one of the easiest vegetables to grow.



Whether you live in Sumner, Washington - "the rhubarb pie capital of the world" - or not, not many things scream springtime quite like fresh rhubarb made into an iconic pie. You'll be able to snag the freshest rhubarb at the market during spring.



If you're missing important vitamins - like iron and magnesium - from your diet, spring is the perfect time to add spinach to your routine. Spinach is a superfood packed with healthy nutrients.



Strawberries are at their sweetest from spring until the end of summer, so enjoy the fresh fruit on top of pancakes or mixed in with your favorite yogurt. On its own, the berry is one of the best foods for weight loss.
